Lacoste Final Collection

My family has always been somewhat religious, but I never truly appreciated the community and culture that religion provides. I used to dread attending church on Easter Sunday or Christmas, finding it boring and a waste of time. However, as I’ve grown older, my understanding of and appreciation for religion and faith have deepened. Since arriving at SCAD Lacoste, I have been surrounded by beautiful churches, monasteries, and cathedrals. These places are absolutely stunning, adorned with gold leaf, exquisite relics, and magnificent sculptures. In France, I've come to realize that the locals place a high value on their churches, and their participation embodies more than just faith; it fosters a sense of community and happiness. Experiencing this has transformed my perspective. When I walked into a cathedral from the 1700s, I felt an overwhelming sense of power and holiness that changed my mind entirely. As an artist, I have always loved iridescence, sparkles, sequins, bright colors, and anything that catches my eye. Upon entering these churches, I was captivated by the incredible metallics and gold leaf, along with the gems, diamonds, statues, and relics surrounding me. I never imagined I could explore my love for iridescence in a church setting, but my experiences in Provence have made me incredibly happy and deeply moved. In my journey to further understand religion and its impact on the faithful, I find myself contemplating my own beliefs. I am inspired by the stunning churches and monasteries, as well as the communal gathering spaces they provide.

Final Print and pattern Collection

The point of this collection is to have a cohesive, well-thought-out print and pattern series. I want it to be both hand-done and professional. With that being said, I also want to showcase my creativity and ability to illustrate uniquely. I drew diamonds and metallic surfaces without using real crystals. I am thrilled with this print collection. I think it’s gorgeous and perfectly matches the theme of my entire Provence collection.

Me and my Collection in Lacoste

I did a deep investigation into religious motifs and royal provincial symbols I encountered on a day-to-day basis while living in Lacoste, France. I took pictures of these symbols and created simple sketches. I’ll try to replicate them while also adding my personal touch to these intricate and detailed motifs in my upcoming projects. Some particular symbols I investigated include frames, crowns, emblems, and crosses. In order to create a well-rounded collection, I needed to research these objects to understand their significance in French culture.

Embellished Handkerchiefs

For the next portion of my project, I focused on cotton handkerchiefs. This fabric perfectly reflects the Provence region. The handkerchiefs are made from a light and airy white fabric, which is perfect for this area. While in Lacoste, I saw them everywhere. I collected two gorgeous ones from the Saturday market and decided to incorporate them into my project. I painted a cross on each, then embroidered and embellished them. I wanted to use blue and red because those colors are very popular in Provence.

This painting is of a crown and common Provençal emblems I saw in churches and around Lacoste. I wanted to create a statement piece and more fine art for my collection. I hand-painted this piece using watercolor and pigments from the Provence region. I also noticed that the textiles in churches were usually embroidered and embellished. To match the area’s style, I made sure to embroider and embellish this fine art piece. I hand-placed over 175 Swarovski crystals and hand-stitched the larger rhinestones. I also researched French golden frames and created a paper frame to match the area’s aesthetic.

Overall, I have never been more happy with an end product. I am thrilled with how each piece of my final collection turned out and how they all connect. It was an absolutely amazing experience to study abroad in Provence, France, and to be inspired by the landscape, the food, and the culture. I will never forget this experience. I learned so much about myself through this collection and how I can persevere and conquer anything. This entire collection is my favorite creative expression I’ve ever created. I am so proud, and I know others will love it too!
